A zapomenutá chátrala.

INVESTOR
Ing. Jiří Pevný, zástupce společnosti Agrodružstvo Vrbovec, oslovil obec Vrbovec, zda by pro kapličku na svých pozemcích nenašla důstojnější místo. Na vlastní náklady připravil projekt i výstavbu. Po jejím dokončení ji slavnostně věnoval obci.

ARCHITEKT
Kapli navrhl Ing. arch. Martin Navrkal Ph.D.

Její zedníci, truhláři, tesaři, zámečníci, klempíři, kováři i malíři odvedli dobrou práci.
a investorem. Umístění má pomoci zdůraznit osy stávajících cest v krajině. Zároveň ji začleňuje mezi ostatní starší drobné prvky sakrální krajinné architektury. Na tomto místě má oslovovat pěší, vybízet k sesednutí z kola i k zastavení vinařů a zemědělců. Je orientována přibližně ve směru východ – západ. Ranní slunce osvítí apsidu, rozzáří obraz v okně a osvětlí část kaple, při západu slunce vstupují paprsky hluboko do interiéru vstupní branou.

Jednoduchá architektura a čisté tvary stavby dávají vyniknout detailům a klasické ruční řemeslné práci. Všimnout si lze mnoha prvků. Tesařské spoje krovu, cihelná vazba pod stolovou deskou nebo křivka římsy si zaslouží pozornost. Část zdiva kaple a kompletní zdivo oltáře pochází z původní kapličky.

Jaké počasí o svatém Bartoloměji, takové bude i celý podzim.
Krásně-li o Bartoloměji, vinaři se smějí.
Svatý Bartoloměj zavádí mraky a činí konec bouřkám.

St. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHAPEL

THE STORY OF THE CHAPEL
At the end of the village, along the road to Strachotice, there used to be a small chapel. With the development of the co-operative farm, the road disappeared and suddenly the chapel was hidden over a fence behind a piggery all forgotten slowly decaying. While working on the demolition of dilapidated buildings, the new owner, Mr. Pevný, chairman of the co-operative farm, decided to build a new chapel instead of repairing the ruined building at its original site.

INVESTOR
Ing. Jiří Pevný, chairman of the co-operative farm Agrodruřstvo Vrbovec, tried to find a suitable, more dignified location for the chapel. At his own expense he invested into the project including the construction. After its completion, he ceremoniously dedicated it to the village.

ARCHITECT
The chapel was designed by Ing. arch. Martin Navrkal Ph.D. Its architectural concept is modern humbly respecting the archetypes of historical sacred buildings in the landscape on the border of South Moravia and Lower Austria. Among other things he made use of the secio aurea (golden section), which appears in many works of the old masters expressing the principles of growth and development in nature. Its layout is rectangular with a circular apse.

CONSTRUCTION
Construction company Atlanta Incorporated was building the chapel from June to August 2022. Its masons, joiners, carpenters, locksmiths, tinsmiths, blacksmiths and painters did a good job. They built the chapel on a location chosen by the mayor of the village, Jiří Písař, together with the architect and the investor. The site is intended to help emphasize the axes of existing roads in the landscape. At the same time, it blends in with other already existing elements of sacral landscape architecture. The chapel should appeal to pedestrians encouraging them to get off their bikes as well as winegrowers and farmers to stop. It is oriented approximately in the east-west direction when the morning sun illuminates the apse brightening the painted glass bringing the morning light to part of the chapel. At sunset the rays enter deep into the interior through the entrance door. Outside the chapel there is a footpath connecting the road with one linden tree planted on each side.

BUILDING ELEMENTS
The simple architecture and pure shapes of the building let the details and classic handcraft work stand out. You can especially notice the carpentry joints of the roof truss; the brick bond under the tabletop or the curve of the ledge.
Part of the chapel's masonry and the complete altar's masonry come from the original chapel. The roof covering is the so-called “spire tile”, which is a reduced format of burnt roofing tiles. The entrance staircase is upcycled as it is taken from already demolished Old Hospital pavilion on Vídeňská Street in Znojmo.

COLORED GLASS
The interior is dominated by a coloured glass, which is part of a built-in cabinet forming the only window to the chapel. The grape vine pattern of the painting is an expression of the quote: "I am the vine, you are the branches" John 15.5 The author of the painting is Hanka Dostálová, the local artist from Znojmo.

St. BARTHOLOMEW
The chapel is dedicated to St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. He is the patron of many trades, including shepherds, farmers and winemakers. He was born in Cana of Galilee. According to legend, he preached the word of God in Asia Minor, northern India, Persia and Armenia, where he was skinned alive and then, according to legend, beheaded. His name day is August 24. In folk meteorology, this day has an important position as the turning point between summer and autumn. A number of folk sayings are associated with it:

  • After St. Bartholomew´s day the sun is not so hot anymore.
  • St. Bartholomew shortens the afternoon.
  • The weather on St. Bartholomew´s day will be like this all autumn.
  • If you talk about St. Bartholomew beautifully, the winemakers will smile.
  • St. Bartholomew brings clouds and puts an end to storms.

BLESSING OF THE CHAPEL
On August 29, 2022, as part of a celebration called Summer Night in the Vineyard, the chapel was ceremoniously handed over to the village in the presence of the investor, the architect, the management of the construction company and several craftsmen. The parish priest Jaroslav Kárník blessed it and it was dedicated to St. Bartholomew.

LOCKING THE VINEYARD
In immediate vicinity of the chapel, a celebration is held on the last Saturday in August as part of the Epiphany weekend, which features ceremonious locking of the vineyard. It is a symbolic end of work in the vineyards before the harvest. By erecting a long pole decorated with a bouquet compiled of nine different herbs, the winegrowers let everyone know that entry to the vineyards is prohibited  and harvesters - guardians of the vineyards, guard the grapes protecting them from starlings and thieves. On the Summer Night in the Vineyard – an open-air festival, people sing, dance, taste wine, sit on benches and blankets in the grass around the chapel having a picnic.
